How did you get your PSC nickname?
A girl in high school gave it to me.
What is your real name and age?
Kayla, 26
Where are you from and what do you like best about being there?
I live in Florida, and I love it because winter is practically non existent.
What do you do to keep the bills paid?
This and that. I'm trying to land some illustration work.
What do you do in your spare time?
Draw, learn, and play video games
How did you find PSC, and what do you like most about the site?
I found it while attending a graphic design vocational school. I love the community here.
If you could change one thing at PSC, what would it be and why?
I'd prefer that the owner be someone who took part in the community.
Is there any other information about you would like to pass on?
How many hours per week do you spend on PSC?
What other sites, not Photoshop related, do you like to surf?
What tools do you use to chop?
Cintiq Companion, Windows 8, Photoshop CS6
What gets your creative juices flowing, how do you create a masterpiece?
Drink! Drink! Drink!
What inspires you?
Other artists of all skill level
Do you have a system? Does a chop have to be done a certain way following steps or are you a messy chopper and just go with the flow?
Failure is my system. When something doesn't work, I often derive from it a different idea that will.
What style of chop do you prefer to create?
Fantasy illustrations
Filters, brushes and techniques: Which do you use, and not use, and why?
My tools of choice are of course a black round brush and an eraser, dodge and burn, and the polygonal lasso tool. Layers and their options are important for my work.
When do you know that you have it just right, or is it constant changes up until, or after, you post?
Oh, I change and change and change up to the day of the contest. I often submit my work early and change from there, because having it submitted makes me look at my work with more scrutiny. It makes me more anxious to what people are going to see when it's left the way it is.
What is the limit to what you will chop?
While there are things that I don't feel I'd ever chop, I don't want to limit myself with a rule about it.
Are there any tips and/or tricks that you would like to pass along to less experienced choppers?
Spend enough time on your work to make it worth keeping later.
What is your favorite type of source image, and why?
I think my ability to chop an image is more about my mindset and mood rather than what the source is.
There is often talk about how the source is used and to what extent it should be. What are your views on all sources, outside source use and animations?
I feel that the source should be identifiable and used in a creative way, but I don't feel that there should be any strict rule on it. Some people do simple things, but do them better than anyone else. As far as gifs go, I look for whether or not the frames move smoothly. Also, I prefer it when it could still get a vote if it wasn't moving. It's my opinion that the animation should add to it, not just stand alone.
What is your preferred resource for outside source images?
I've taken to DeviantArt's large collection of source work recently.
In your opinion what makes a good chop?
I am very open to different styles. I just like to see work. However, I am typically a stingy voter. I don't vote for every chop that looks like it had some work or that looks good. I vote for the chops that I feel should win.
Do you have a system to get things started?
Getting over the guilt of having not started earlier.
Have you ever completed a chop and then decided not to enter it in the contest? If so, why?
I usually don't get to the point of finishing it before scrapping it. If I know it's not going anywhere, I try not to waste my time.
After you finish your chop do you just post it or seek opinions of family and/or fellow choppers first?
Sometimes I'll ask my husband to check it out. I don't ask other choppers for their initial opinion before posting, because I don't want them to feel obliged to vote for it.
If some one finds a fault in your work do you change it or stay with what you posted?
I am open to criticism, and there is often times issues with my work that I don't catch or don't understand. If I have time and there are legitimate issues, I will often work with them. However, I also feel that as artists we are free to do things with our work that others may not agree with. It's ultimately my choice what my finished chop looks like.
What qualities do you look for when deciding to vote on a chop?
I ask myself "Would I want this to win?". Clean work and a wow factor.
Some member prefer not to vote for filtered chops or animations. Is there any particular style/type of chop you won't vote for?
Not necessarily. I take it on a case by case basis.
Time is always a factor, how much time do you spend on a chop and how much time is too much?
I rarely do a chop for the day of or the next day, because I take around 5+ hours to do a chop. I don't think you can take too much time to make a work that you're really proud of. I don't need another chop to hide from my portfolio. I have enough of those already!
We all love to get votes. Now are you a constant vote checker or do you just let it go and check once a day? (be honest)
Oh god, my poor refresh button.... I've even resorted using my phone to check all day. I need help.
What chop of yours did not do as well as you expected?
Looking back, I felt like "The Heimlich" could have done better. I don't feel it should have won, just done better. I also wished more people liked my Owl in the H2H. I will be bitter to the grave. ;)
What do you consider your best chop so far?
My Forest Fortress is my absolute favorite chop so far.
What do you consider your worst chop so far?
It will remain hidden in my portfolio forever. If I could delete half of my chops, I would.
Who is your favorite chopper out there and why?
I don't have a favorite. Every person has the chance here to contribute something great.
What do you NOT like to see in a chop, and why not?
I hate seeing animal gore. It makes me sad.
What is the best chop of all time?
I'm hoping that's still yet to come.
Do you have any other PSC related comments to add?
Quit complaining. If you were nice and made friends here, maybe you'd care more about the relationships you've made on the site instead of the votes that won't matter to you in a year.
