This is stupid but how does 'chat' work? I've never chatted online before. Is it one long thread like a stream of consciousness.... or are there rooms and stuff like that....?

there's very little consciousness in our chat room.

Our chat used to be an active and fun place to hang out once in awhile. It was a great way to get to know other members. However, since facebook, our chat is a very lonely place.

Feel free to click on "chat" located at the top of the page and see if anyone's about. If you scroll to the bottom, it will list other members who are either there or unconscious.

here on psc its like like this long stream indeed. its because there a are ppl from virtually everywhere (even though it comes down to americans, dutchies and a blue aussie) and they all like to read back what happened the last hours. no rooms, no privacy - and indeed hardly consciousness.

anyway... you just go to the "chat" here, type something in that gray box and hit the "post" button. eventually somebody else is online and likes to answer, which should immediatley show up in your browser. you can have a look on the very bottom of the chat page who else is (just technically) present in the chat.

hm... now, is that a chat tutorial or what?

However, it seems that most people from here found it more convenient to use facebook accounts for chitchat. I have no idea how the PSCers organized themselves on facebook, but somehow they found there together and started using that chat (maybe someone with insight wants to explain that part?).

I hardly ever hit up Facebook and it's blocked at work. So PSC Chat is really the only place I can chat with people (outside maybe Google Chat via Gmail).
