Can anyone point me in the direction of a custom brushes tutorial?

Hi neil..
There is a tutorial on Photoshop brushes on this site. Just click under " Tutorials" and you will be directed to the page. The Photoshop brushes tutorial is at the bottom of the page.
I'm not sure what you are looking for, but if you only want to make custom brushes, here is a quick way to do it.

Open Photoshop-load a picture and make a selection using either the elliptical or rectangular marque tool. Then open the "edit" menu at the top left of the Photoshop interface. Under the "edit" menu, you will find a tab that says" define brush preset".
Click on that tab, and the area you have selected will appear as a brush preset. You can name it and click Ok. Now open the brush tool, and usually at the bottom of the list of brushes, you will find the brush preset you just created. You can change its size etc. using the available sliders.

Hope either the tut referral or the short set of directions helps a little..
