I have a layer- how can I attain a lasso outline of the contour of this layer? (I want my lasso to cling to the perimeter of this layer)

Hold down CNTRL and LEFT-CLICK on the layer thumbnail
That should do it.
(CS2 - in Cs1 or earlier you can do the same but click ANYWHERE in the layer indicator and it will work - for CS2 you have to click RIGHT on the actual thumbnail for this to work).
Next question!

Dear Dr. Rein:
Whenever I double-shift-control click on an empty layer, my toes curl. Is this normal?

I live in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the wettest places on the North American Continent. If you don't LOVE THE RAIN you just ain't gonna be too happy here!

I love myself, don't get me WRONG, but the actual constant precipitation is a DRAG!
There is a time and place for lots of moisture, but sometimes there can BE TOO MUCH!!!!!!!

I hate rain in the winter. (not you, kimosabe from Vancouver North).
Christmas without snow is like...
(let's see, what's fun to do and can include a word that rhymes with snow, which if it doesn't happen is like fun, but not really fun, but ok nonetheless....anybody?)

Cut that out, people will start talking!
Back to OBXOR's question, if Rein's suggestion doesn't work (which it should), try using the magic wand to select the empty pixels on your layer, go to SELECT-->similar (to choose all the empty pixels on that layer), then SELECT--> inverse. The image on the layer will then be selected.
*edit*
I think I misunderstood your question. If you want the perimeter of the layer selected, can't you just click on your layer and select all?
