Suggestions on how to better create motion would be appreciated.

Try using two layers of the same guy and applying a strong motion blur in the layer behind. also you can blur in the front layer, but only in the superior zones. This is only a suggestion. I did it once and nobody liked it :-)

radial blur with the zoom option .. apply it to a few different layers and play with the masks
