Any advice on how to improve this post, especially in the areas of lighting/shadows, since that gave me the most trouble? And, what's the best way to select the original w/o getting that annoying green halo? Thanks!

I think your shaow is too heavy and I personally would have thrown it to the right and kept the map and his face free. Creating the shadow on a separate layer would also allow you to split it it the bottom of the base the map is mounted on and you could h
