I actually have a theory about this, it's called "The Ass-kicking Theory of Movie Plots" My theory is that the first 2/3 of the movie is nothing more than "asskicking justification" and the final 1/3 is where the asskicking happens. The Princess Bride is the first example that comes to mind. Wesley spends the first 2/3 of the movie getting HIS ass kicked, so that when he starts kicking asses in the last 1/3 of the movie, we'll still think of him as a hero, because his asskicking is justified.
The moviemakers can spin this by, instead of the hero kicking a bunch of ass at the end, he (or she) spends the last third of the movie overcoming all the asskicking of the previous 2/3 of the movie. Like when in T2 you see whatsherface doing pull-ups in the mental asylum. Or how Kpax disappears at the end.
The best movies combine the two, like when Ed Norton realizes that he IS Tyler Durden, and also manages to blow up all the buidings at the end of Fight Club.
Hope this helps

Yah, all movies do have this basic premise/plot, I am interested in GOOD ones that aren't fight scenes or car chases...ones that real people would call their favorites.

What about Shrek? He wins the princess even in his ogre like state. That's victorious love.

And what about RUDY??? He plays football for Notre Dame despite all odds! The scene where he runs out on the field to the cheers of the crowd is great. (based on true story)

The film "Swordfish" where Stanley Jobson(Hugh Jackman) has a few minutes to hack into somewhere for Gabriel Shear(John Travolta) while being somewhat distracted by a young woman.

Seriously, though, there was this guy named Joseph Campbell, and he wrote a whole bunch about "the Hero" and even wrote this thing called The Hero's Journey where he sort of breaks down the common threads of every hero's journey. And then I guess George Lucas read these writings and that's what Star Wars was all about.

How qbout Planet of the Apes, where Taylor manages to "defeat" the apes, only to find that he's been on Earth all along...
Or how about Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, when Chang's ship is destroyed?
