[quote="FAQ"]Q: How is a contest winner determined?
A: The winning image of each contest is the one that receives the most votes. If multiple images end up with the same amount of votes, the tie-breaker is which image was posted first. When an image file is updated while the contest is still open, the entry time is set to the time of the last edit. Editing an image after the contest has ended or just changing the description/notes does not affect the time stamp.[\quote]

I hired a hitman to kill Anfa. The rules say, you can't win if you are dead. Sorry Anfa. A csi team was sent in and it was discovered that the blood on the machete in the image was Anfa's. A chopper has to do what a chopper has to do. How else can you beat Anfa???? :shock:Thanks Marco.......I mean..Mr. hitman.

Bah. Before Advantage the site was all about speed chopping so the first-in is a carryover from those days. I think it's perfectly fair for this situation. What would you think would be a fair tie-breaker?

I wondered, I finished 2nd and 4th on a couple occasions with the same votes as 1st and 3rd place entries. It was not big deal but I always wondered how it was decided. Ha ha who's kiddin' who I was cursing about how Marco already has enough wins and he should spread the love. Just kiddin' Marco.
I think for first place it should be a 24hr vote-off, that would be super cool.

I think it's fair the way it is (first poster wins if there's a tie)
however, one could argue (and let's face it, we all love to do that around here) that it might be more fair if the person who received the tying vote first would win.

how about it's decided by the "gravity" of votes received ?
As a simple example.
Johnny Bloggs and Mary Jane each got 3 votes.
The 3 people that voted for Johnny had a combined personal vote tally of 92
The 3 that voted for Mary had a tally of 73.
Johnny had the higher gravity and therefore wins.
I spose it'd prolly be too complicated for whatever scripting is used.
ah well.

Wouldn't be so hard to accomplish but it wouldn't be fair, as the outcome of this would be depending on the photoshopping ability of someone else. So basically even if you have a tremendous and fantastic image, the awfull work of someone else could mean you lose the game.

I have always supported allowing a tie, if two or more images collect the same number of votes in any given contest. I would prefer to see the prize positions awarded based on which images the voters supported with the greatest number of votes. If two images received the same number of votes, then I believe a tie would be the fairest way to honor their achievement. Otherwise, the merit of placing first is not a strict reflection of which image the voters thought deserved the most votes, but simply a function of which image was posted first. Artistic merit, as determined by the voters' opinion is, therefore, not the deciding factor.
I realize that the Advantage system is compromised to some small extent if ties are allowed. But, in my view, the compromise is not significant enough to justify the awarding of a prize position based solely on the "first image posted" criteria. This is especially true if one of the image posters does not have the funds to purchase an Advantage account. Then a person's financial status may be a significant variable in determining who "wins" and who doesn't.
However, I also understand the reluctance to change a tie breaking protocol which may rarely have to be used, and which may not be of importance to very many people. But the fact that prizes are now awarded in some contests may suggest consideration of a tie breaking protocol that calls for a "run off" vote to determine a winner based on votes rather than posting time.

What broke the tie? I forgot to comment, "Hey, Mack, what's up your end?" Can you ever forgive me, Anfa?
