Probably a really dumb question but I gotta be missing something and I don't know what to look for in the ginormous help file.

I want to mess with the hue/saturation/brightness/etc for just the active layer. How the HECK do I do this in CS2?

Everytime I try something it affects the whole image.

i only hav 7.0 but i think its actually harder to alter the whole image than just one layer...

adjustment layers affect the whole image and if you go to image>adjustments>hue/saturation or whatever it should only affect the selection and the current layer. failing that just lock all the other layers than the layer you want to alter.

hope this helps in some way

make sure you havent got a selection made or that might alter the whole image

i make it a point of pressing CTRL-D to get rid of any selections before using any tool (unless i need the selection)

The H/S command (Image - Adjustments - Hue/Saturation) applies to the current layer/selection only.

A Hue/Saturation adjustment layer by default applies to all layers below. If you want it to apply only to a single layer below, you can define the adjustment layer as a clipping mask.

using cutout adjustment layers should do the trick.

ps: where I said cutout mask it should be clipping mask (thanks to Vokaris for the correct translation Smile )

Dam only just noticed Grefix said the same thing but I have added my red arrows so I have to post it. Very Happy Click on Layer then New adjustment layer then ALT click (on the PC) between the two layers.

I have a sneaky suspicion he is. If Tofu would only use the adjustments directly the the effect would be on the layer he's working on, and not the entire image.

If he's using adjustment layers, the effect is on the whole image (well all layers below the adjustment layer to be precise). Thus, this is where clipping masks come in wich Tofu seems not to be aware of (thus, we're showing how to us them Smile )

Confused

Now I'm thoroughly confused. Laughing

Here's an example of where I had problems:

2Rey's face is the topmost layer and I wanted to match the skin tones to Robin Williams' arm/face. I ended up using the burn tool out of frustration.

So I'm thinking that, according to what's been written, I need to make a clipping mask for the face and then add an adjustment layer?

Or can I link an adjustment layer to another layer so that it only affects that layer?

{back to the lab for experimentation bwuahahahahaha}

Nono, the adjustment layer is the clipping mask Smile

oh well, maybe read this tut from reinman:
http://photoshopcontest.com/tutorials/23/clipping-mask-101.html

it should give you an idea on ow to use it (but instead of using normal layers as clipping masks, use adjustment layers) Smile

Hope you're not getting too confused now :p

Just control/click the selected layer's image in the layers pallette to select it, then click the adjustment layers icon at bottom of layers pallette.
