I would use either the pen tool or masking to do it" another way is too just erase around the outside of the can then freehand marquee the can then Ctrl + Shift + I to inverse selection and hit delete" Cool

Or train your black lab to hold a crushed can in his mouth while you take a picture. Laughing

Jumps out of his seat. Never erase source images if you make a mistake you cant go back especially with multi clicking.

(Sits calmly down)
Take a history snap shot if you do intend to erase.

But ya best off masking around the can

The can can be the top layer or the dog it doesnt matter because either way your going to be hiding somthing.

Put the opacity of the upper one to 50% so you can see where you have to hide with the mask.

Also dont forget to add shadow to the can lots of people forget lighting its important to rememeber.

the layers should look like this
With or without layer sets

Layer set ¬ - Mask around the dog and the can for backgroud placing
Arrow - Highlights - mask to layer set mask
Arrow - Shadow - mask to layer set mask
Arrow - Image corrections and clone stamps - mask to layer set mask
Arrow - Can - Mask layer hiding extra parts
Arrow - Dog - no mask
Layer set ¬
Arrow Background one farm house
Arrow Background 2 beach
Arrow Background 3 street

And so on
Cool hope that helps

first... chill out.
second... just take the source pic layer, copy it, and hide it.

i would have thought a man with your 130-something IQ would have thought of something so simple.

but i guess my 146 beats you Rolling Eyes

While what marx said will 'work', geez thats a lot more work than I would ever do... Professionaly, I try to do things quickly. Time is usually of the essense. Theres always 439587349 different ways for getting from point A to point B.
I bring things in using the pen tool name them 'can' or whatever and just hide the layer at the bottom. then work on the copy... no need to go overboard with steps when copy layer works just fine...
for shadows on an object... a copied layer set at 50% gray and layer to screen then burn till looks good, then a little blur tool to finish it off and soften the edges.

when you've finished, save the psd.. then just flatten the image and it gets rid of all unwanted (hidden layers) save for the web and viola, you have the working .psd and a .jpg for here to enter. just remember not to save the psd after flattening... I've done that once or twice. Embarassed
