Whitlow is an infection in the pulp of the fingertip usually resulting from a prick or a small cut and often leading to abscess formation.

The condition, which is also called felon, is potentially serious and should never be neglected as it may lead to infection of the bone of the fingertip (osteomyelitis).

Pulp space infection causes a dull pain, worse when the hand is hanging, and redness and swelling of the finger. At this stage, the condition may often be controlled by antibiotic treatment.

NB: The term "whitlow" is also used to refer to an infection of the finger skin, in the region of the nail, or of the skin at the edge of the nail, by Herpes simplex viruses.
