When I first opened this thread I never realized how much of a debate would take place here. I agree with many of you that, yes, this is photoshopcontest and what we create in photoshop is to be judged no matter whether it's a still image or animation. After reading all your posts I still feel that animated gifs could still have an advantage over stills. If a picture is worth a thousand words then ten pictures are worth ten-thousand. Animation can keep a storyline moving by introducing, for example, humor at key timing points. A single image can tell a story, but cannot offer the element of surprise by changing into something unexpected. By doing this you are not only being an artist, you're a director. Put it this way, would you rather see a picture book of a movie or actually see the movie itself? Now that I've rambled for a while I'm gonna learn how to make an animated gif and post it. If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.

LOL, I used to huff and puff over this subject---
I'm still witing for my last argument to come to fruition and see them put
FLASH in photoshop, then watch everyone scream to have it in contests.
BTW, Proc, you have this whole site and own the template--
why you havent set up a clone site yet for flash contest..I don't get it.
The guy that owns flashcontest.com is willing to sell for $1,400

I never vote for gifs. I think that format should be banned.

I guess because my purpose for coming to this site is to improve my photoshop and creative abilities in photo manipulation. Gifs are more animation. Although i would love to see a gif contest on this site, but i would definately seperate the two. IMO
This would make so much more sense if your avatar wasn't animated

ha ha good one. After reading everyone's comments i can see why this is such a big debate. Maybe i just wouldn't want to see them in a special tournament, or prize winning contest, unless it's only that, me personally. The day to day contests are cool, maybe i'll give it a try.
