The "dot in the middle" at least used to be called a "bullet" (see def. 2b.... 2b or not 2b, that is the question... *ahem*, anyway, moving on...). Another way to get it is with the alternate keystrokes. On a Mac, it's option+8 to get "•" (would that be alt+8 on windows?).

agree with Eve...easiest way I've ever found. I make my dot bigger than the actual text and then move it up where I (and Eve) marked.
