Could someone help me on the subject of creating a vector image? ai. file? Does Adobe Illustrator work well? Is it a long process? Does it drastically change your original image?
Thanks!

Smart Vectors are easy in Ai with "Live Trace". Simple two clicks to convert.

What exactly do you want to do? By original image, I assume you mean a photoshop file?
Illustrator will not alter a photoshop file. You import the image into Illustrator and work over it. The image is either linked to the file, or embedded. If you link the image, you can "edit original", which will launch Photoshop. Once you edit your image in Photoshop, the image will be updated in Illustrator. Embedded images are not editable.
If you post more details, I can probably make more sense.

Ok lets say I create an abstract design image either a psd. or a high res jpeg in photoshop CS3. Then to turn it into a vector image I would...?

Ah , Splodge told me to go ahead and plug one of my favorite
illustrators that got their start here at PSC. (shh, she's my favorite, but i don't wanna cause any distress amongst my other illustrator friends)
anyway.. she started at psc with nothing and now she's brilliant..
I give to you the one and only Kitty.

Use the pen tool in PS (or Illustrator if you have it) to trace the design.
You could use live trace, but that usually doesn't work very well.

yup...as foot said, you would have to import the photoshop image into illustrator and basically, trace it (if you insist on using Illustrator). Can you post an image here as an example of what you want vectorized?
