Dick and Jane: the rambunctious adventures of two knee-socked, slightly irritating, good-as-gold, simple-minded, very white, and really downright boring children.
The text for one of those primers begins “See Dick. See Dick run. See Dick play. See Dick run and play.” Dick seems lonely—or at the very least unimaginative and the tiniest bit anal, with the pristine play outfit complete with clean shoes and his shirt always tucked in.
Dick and Jane and their dog, Spot, were quite the active individualists. They each run and play and kick balls independent of one another and sometimes tease each other and appear to gloat in their superior set of belongings—see Jane buy a new Mercedes. See Dick cringe and plot her downfall.
Try Goodnight, Moon or If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, Jeff. There are so many great children's books.

"Where the wild things are"....and "Could be Worse"....those are the two i most remember reading as a child.
Picked up a copy of "where the wild things are" at the local goodwill for a quarter. Also got a Mario Puzo "The Godfather". It may be a first edition as it only has one copywrite date 1969.....paid a buck for it.
Still have not gotten the dot matrix printer i was after .....Sorry...back to the Soft Porn channel.

This is so Ironic? I was looking online last night at Dick and Jane for my three year old. The only examples just weren't the right ones. The books my big sister taught me to read(1970/71) were 12 page paperbacks with a yellow cover. The printing and illustrations were all black and white. They came in a numbered series starting with #1 See Spot Run. Number 2 was a little more complicated adding Dick. Jane was added for three. The last of the 20 or so books had Sally and a few 5-6 letter words.
I was super lucky to have a three year older sister. She brought a new book home every week and taught me to read it. We basically learned to read at the same time. Teachers deal with stupid kids all day long. The few prepared/smart ones always get better treatment. The cool smart ones (like me) get popularity and social acceptance. I'd like to give nicholasdoggy the same advantages I had. I want him to be a leader.

Dick & Jane books are good for children who are learning to read. Because of the repetition of words, I get that. But I agree, so many times I my eyes & as my 6yr old struggles through the stories...
for good 'story books' to read to the kids...
Anything by Seuss
The Missing Piece meets the Big O
Mouse Soup
Pickle for a Nickel
The Story of Ferdinand
Russell the Sheep
Mo Willems stories are fun, like Pigeon finds a hot dog or Today I Will Fly.
one of my personal favorites is Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm

That's pretty stupid.
Is there a 'naughty word' ranking system I am unaware of?
