Changed my mind about the source at the last second (literally) so I'm a bit later than I wanted to be.

Same drill as last time as far as keeping the source pic as itself. In other words don't make the light bulb into something that's not a light bulb and keep the scale of the bulb the same. This time turn the light on. I know this is basic and that's why there's a semi-twist. You have to include a surrounding scene and cast the light from the bulb. Heck even go black light if the inspiration strikes. Cool

The thought behind this challenge is to show different techniques for extracting the white object from the white background, how to create a glow, how to create cast light, and how to create shadows. HAVE FUN! Smile

Last week when I saw this forum game I thought sweet a great competition with guidlines to force me to use specific tools I normally don't use. All I have to do is give it a try and I will get all this amazing feed back on how cool it is, what a great job, this sucks balls, are you F**ki*g kiddin me, along with great tips and tricks on how to improve it. So I posted my chop "the kitten looking thru the glass at the fish" NOT ONE RESPONSE,Zilch,Noda so I think well I can look at there PSD files and rip those apart to learn. That was a nogo also my internet is so jacked up it took 2 hours or more to download file and when I went to open them they were all incomplete files, corupt. Which that part is no ones fault I just thought I would finish venting.
Don't get me wrong I Love Love this place I have went from using $3.00 of PS to maybe around $600.00 since I have been here.
I just post this to maybe help this thread stick around and keep it seperate from the everyday challenges
Again I don't want to sound like I am bitching just puttin in feed back to help it grow.

Jerry

First, very rough, draft. I'd post the PSD but it's too big for box.net and my pschost account login isn't working at the moment.

Did you use the pen tool to extract the bulb? I've been trying different methods short of that.

I did. I first tried to use a channel mask but there's practically zero difference between the channels. Next I tried the magic wand and it sucked as expected (yeah snicker all you want I wanted to see what it would do). Knowing the pen tool rocks for defined shapes I went with that.

I zoomed in to 300% and started outlining the path and setting the bezier curves. I first did just the flourescent tube by itself. Then I duplicated that path and modified the copy so that it had the base too. This way I can quickly get either just the tubes or the entire bulb depending on my need. Cool

Thought I'd give it a crack too.

Its a gif to show the diff between on and off.
Had to make the light-globe smaller though, it would be too bright at the full size.
