Look at the image, squint your eyes and make the first thing you think about. Print the image, take a box of matchsticks and pour it over the image to see if something unusual forms. But most important, go do something totally diffrent from what you are used to do.

Not sure if this helps, but this is how I work:
I put the image in PS and start to cut out the things I don't want to use. I.e. if there's a rock with sky, I cut out the sky and start to adjust the rock. By doing that, the ideas usually come by itself.
I don't think I ever started to work on a chop here in where I exactly knew what I was going to make. Most ideas come when all the basic elements have been cut out, turned or flipped or even colour-corrected.

Box of matches! thats a new one on me.
Give it a go tho.
I seem to find that i only think of ideas when a comp has already started, i look through the entries and something just clicks in my mind. Only problem then is i dont have much time to spend on an image.
I can never think of anything in advance, i can look at it for ages and still all i see is the image.
I've even started putting the images as wallpaper on my pc at work to see if something clicks, but no it dont work
The one entry i have won was not completely my own idea, all my work and most was my ideas but the initial thought came from my partner.
But give up i will not and persevear i will, being beaten is not an option, i will prevail, i will succeed and i will conquer!
But first a nice cup of tea

Thats a good point, i dont think i have ever been clear what i'm gonna create before i start, it just kind of grows bit by bit, and its knowing when to stop thats also important.
But i'm also still fairly new to all things artistic and over time i hope i'll think of different types of ideas. After all i cant think of something if its not in my head to begin with, even a spark begins somewhere.

I open up the picture to full screen and stare at it with some ambient/techno music playing (no words!). It probably won't work for a lot of people, but that's my way of tapping into my imagination. I use Drone Zone on iTunes radio. Another one that I occasionally use is to get a random word generator such as this one: http://watchout4snakes.com/creativitytools/RandomWord/RandomWordPlus.aspx and just click through a few words until something hits me. Good luck!

I get an idea but my final chop is not the first thing I wanted to make. First I look at the image and think of things that reminds me of the image i.e people , places, object , events. Then I search the images on google to find the images of thing (image, people , places, object , events) that reminds me of the original image.
After looking at the photos on google I usually came with couple of ideas, and because I'm not so good chopper I implement the easiest idea on the image.
Try this maybe it will work for you.

Well the music I listen to is also affecting my idea once I'm working on it.
Like said before here in this topic, some Techno could do the job, aswell could classical music.
For example: That Nazgul entry I made a few weeks ago. I had cut out the dragon and didn't really know what direction I was heading, until my playlist started to play the song 'Knife in the dark', from Lord of the Rings and there was my idea
Or my last entry 'different gravities' started to come out when my playlist was playing 'Atlantic Angelis' (by accident, I never really don't listen to meditation-songs)
Never really thought about it until now

What you speak of is lovingly referred to as "chopper's block". Seems everyone but Rey has had it at one time or another.
One thing I found works to get the imagination flowing is to read fiction books. Genre doesn't matter as long as it's descriptive. This forces your brain to create the visuals of the scenes described.
At least it works for me. Now I just have to find time to learn how to create the things I see in the sources.

I have a few scotches and a couple of joints and I pretend I'm Marco. However I then get the munchies, play loud headbanging music and go upstairs to molest the spouse. After all this I then...................get really confused.
Sorry I could not help you more.
