NATURE: Orangutan Diary
On: BBC 2 North (102)
Date: Sunday 1st March 2009 (starting in 8 minutes)
Time: 17:40 to 18:10 (30 minutes long)
Steve Leonard and Michaela Strachan introduce more stories from the world's biggest ape rescue centre, home to over 600 orphaned and homeless orangutans. Mama Abut and her baby, found starving in a palm oil plantation, get a second chance at life when rescued orangutans are flown into the wild heart of Borneo and to freedom. At the centre, babies in the nursery need 24-hour care, playful orphans in the Forest School learn the skills they need in the wild, and older primates gain independence.

I've been lucky enough to of been to the Sepilok rescue centre, the younger ones are fed at certain times of the day and they all come in from the jungle when the food comes out, its great watching them swing in on ropes and playing as they go. When they get older they are encouraged not to rely on the food from the rescue centre, which encourages them to find thier own food out in the jungle and eventually they stop coming to the centre.
I must also mention the Labuk Bay centre not far from from Sepilok, it help the Proboscis monkeys. They are the funny looking ones with the big noses.
Both these centres do a great job in trying to stop the extinction of such wonderfull creatures, and they are fighting to keep the centre going.
Any help they can get is most welcome and appreciated, so if anyone feels strong enough about this cause then please check out the web site.
