I carved these 3 little uglies the other night.

They are not any prize winning masterpieces, just something I thought I would share with ya.

If you have any carving uglies, how about posting them in here.

Nice job on the teeth. I can't carve worth doodly-squat. What do you use for tools?

I used a dremel with a standard drill bit, a razor knife, and one of those cheapo pumpkin carving saws, and of course a sharpie


I almost forgot plastic, need plastic to keep the dremel from tossing stuff all over the kitchen.
hehe.


the dremel is what I used to expose the lighter pumpkin flesh, and shape some of the teeth.

I'm carving ten pumpkins this year, once I've got them all done I'll post them.

the family has been sick the last few with the flu so since they were carved out, i have basically abandoned the pumpkins. They are not pleased.. lol

In The Netherlands we do not much with Halloween. In some parts of the land they do trick or treat, and do this 'candy-walk' with special songs and lampions. We name it Sint Maarten and it's on November 11.

It took me roughly 3 or 4 hours, counting setting up the plastic, and what not.

Never carve them using a dremel without safety glasses (like i did)

heh,, thanks for the comment on the teeth,
I used dremel and the pumpkin saw for the initial cut. Then I statred using a sharp razor to get the close shape, then a bit more dremel to finalize the shape.
I then used a combo of the blade scraping and dremel several times to make them consistent. I have a bunch of pics of the process if you all are curious.. just say the word.



lol.. the middle one sure does resemble reys submit.. heh, thats awesome.

This was the first time I ever attempted making jack-o-lanterns have personality like this. It was fun, the kid love them, and the wife loves them as well.......

I have bad news......

My pumpkins did not withstand the nice day we had yesterday. i regret i cannot light them up.. but at least I have several pics of them. lots of pics of the making..

Sanctuary, here are some tips..
soak them in cold water, and I rinse mine often in cold.
it helps keep them firm, especially for the fine detail work. Also the sludge will come out and make a cleaner palette to work with.

Have a razor, and a serrated knife. If you can get a blade for a jig saw type of blade (or get one of the cheapo carving kits).

Have lots of different sizes of SHARP blades.

I used a rotary tool to "skin" mine, it was very messy, but it does a good job and fast.

Sharpie, good to put the face on, remember draw to the inside, don't want trace lines on the finished product.

Pumpkins are tough to get started and skin, but once penetrated, they cut easily and quickly. Take your time so you don't over cut.

To shape teeth like I did on mine, I made the rough shape first with the dremel, then finer shape with a saw blade. I then smoothed them out by scraping gently to smooth it out.

Most of all, have fun. If you mess up, don't sweat it, use it to your advantage, and make it look even meaner. If you wanna ask a question, feel free, I will do the best i can to answer in the most non confusing way I can.

What happened to them? I carved one up a couple weeks ago just to see how long it would withstand the weather, and after several heavy rains, and temps ranging from 50-80 degrees, it only has a bit of mold on the inside to show for it. I can't imagine what weather would have done to yours in only 4 days.

There you go
