When someone said: more blur on the shadows... or: use the dodge tool! I had no idea what they are talking about… hardly know what a layer was. I had the Dutch PS version

First time I chopped two images together was in a college class back in 1992. It was on an old Machintosh, the kind that look like a little box with a black and white screen. I had to edit my family members into a family photo collage.

In 2006 I dreamed up a silly book idea. In order to try to sell it to publishers I thought I'd mock up the cover to go along with the manuscript. I had virtually no experience with chopping or image manipulation of any sort, but I went ahead and did it anyway. Here's the result:
Not very good, I know. I whipped it together with a shareware copy of Paint Shop Pro 7. All of the characters--including the flying squirrel are mentioned
in the mock Beatle lyrics. Here's the squirrel, to be sung to the tune "Girl":
Squirrel
I am waiting for the Japanese to make a movie
all about a squirrel from outer space.
It’s a giant squirrel that wants to crush
our cities and we
think it’s going to end the human race.
A squirrel! Squirrel!
It will bare huge teeth like those of some outrageous beaver,
flap its wings and then begin to fly.
It will devastate the earth, you see,
with laser eye beams,
and plaster us with droppings from the sky.
A squirrel! Squirrel!
Old Ishirô Honda wrote it down
but never filmed it. What a fool.
Like Godzilla and Rodan, he penned it somewhere in Japan.
Too cool! Cool, cool, cool!
Squirrel! Squirrel!
It would star Tim Robbins and would co-star Michael Landon
–-never mind, I think the guy is dead.
For the squirrely bug-eyed monster they can get Sarandon
and slap a little makeup on her head.
A squirrel! Squirrel! Squirrel!
A squirrel ...
Each lyric had a pithy introduction, but reading them now I find they're not all that pithy. Here's one for the tune "Glass Onion":
Last Bunion
I’ve held a lot of flat hairy feet
–-some massive and some rather petite.
I’m finished now. I’ve made enough dough
from straightening toes.
Looking at those hump-backed insteps
–-no more of that as long as I live.
Just took out my last bunion.
There’s not another callus for me, man.
Won’t have to hold my nose for a fee, man.
Won’t clip another nail, don’t you know?
Your callus can grow.
Retiring to the Florida shore, yeah.
Won’t have trouble trying to make ends meet, yeah.
Just took out my last bunion.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
Just took out my last bunion.
A mansion with a pool on a hill
–-I’ll have a lot of free time to kill.
So find another podiatrist
–-I’m finished with this.
Fixing to sail on the ocean.
Open up my own beer joint, yeah.
Just took out my last bunion.
One more, to the tune of "Help!"
Hell!
Hell takes anybody. Hell, nearly everybody.
Hell. You know it’s crowded there. Hell.
Dali, Cole Younger, Plutarch, Tojo, Thomas Gray,
Evita, Goering, Marx, Bert Russell, Lenin, James Earl Ray,
Guevara, Gacey, Freud, Kant, all went to their doom.
Balanchine and Eddy Gein. Hell’s running out of room.
Hell’s a lot like France. When you go down,
you’ll see Charles DeGaulle and Jean Paul Sartre around.
Hell’s ten million feet beneath the ground,
and it stinks. Soon you’ll see.
There’s my ex-wife and Chiang Kai-shek and Richard Chase,
You’ll never see so many sinners in one place.
Ted Bundy, Mao, Ma Barker, Nietzsche, Baudelaire,
old Zhou Enlai, John Reed, Degas, de Sade, and Molière.
Hell’s a lot like France. When you go down,
you’ll see Charles DeGaulle and Jean Paul Sartre around.
Hell’s ten million feet beneath the ground,
and it stinks. Soon you’ll see.
Cortez, Carl Jung, Arbuckle, William Randolph Hearst,
Nikita Khrushev, Khomeini, Elizabeth I,
Rasputin, Hitler, Proust, Pol Pot, and David Hume.
Eisenstein, and Wittgenstein. Hell’s running out of room.
Hell’s a lot like France. When you go down,
you’ll see Charles DeGaulle and Jean Paul Sartre around.
Hell’s ten million feet beneath the ground,
and it stinks. Soon you’ll see, you’ll see, you’ll see. Oy.
Anyway, the book was rejected by six publishers. I got some nice editorial comments, but no cash. Instead, I ended up here. Chopping.

Use to do color separations with a very large process camera when technology made me obsolete. So took a short course on basic computer graphics and after a few years still learning. Do this mostly as a hobby. Have always love to draw and paint. This took me a long time to do on a Macintosh Performa 6300CD. Anybody susceptible to seizures please look away from it.

You wrote something about a squirrel and ended up at PSC, that makes perfect sense to me!

I had to work with a team of other kids to make this website in school. I did the graphics...
http://library.thinkquest.org/03oct/01279/
It's odd that the website still exists. That was right around when I first used Photoshop. Before then, the extent of my computer art was limited to Microsoft Paint.

Started working with Photoshop 5 around 1998 and was absolutely useless at it for ages, until I bought a tutorial book called ' Photoshop 5 Bible' by Deke McClelland.
It was my Epiphany on the digital road to Photo-Chopping, and have bought his subsequent ref books for every up-grade ever since.
For you newbies out there, check his latest 'Bible' out at your nearest bookstore or library... It ain't called a Bible for nothing, as it's the last word in answering your pixel prayers!
Can't believe how far Adobe has pushed the envelope with this old workhorse, and the world wouldn't be the same today without it.
So STFUAC is all I have to say!
