Happened across a documentary tonight about the Hamilton Moveable Type Museum in Two Rivers Wisconsin. Fascinating history about how computers affected the printing industry and particularly wood type setting. The letter forms are beautiful pieces of art.

I find my self drawn to an oak woman strong, firm and standing tall. Though some times a tall flexible willow will catch my eye. That's the wood types I like!

The documentary was a little sad as it showed how the art of typesetting is being lost to time. The people who have the skills are dying off.

Kerning was easily reduced to rules and/or to extensive look-up tables. So the computers won that one!

I spent most of my career in graphic arts converting "art" to rules and technology amenable to computers.

I hail the automation of the basic graphic arts, and I cheer the renegades who keep us honest and refreshed by bucking the computerization of society!
