Until now I've always made my cutouts using the Extract tool which is fine for regular objects but too much trouble with complex irregular shapes. I just found a plugin called Fluid Mask which might be useful to others in the same boat.

Have you tried it yet? It isn't ready for download I saw. It mostly looks very easy, but try extensis Mask tool and you will find out that it is better to learn to work with the Pen tool Wink

Yep, the pen tool is the way to go. Definately. That and learning to work with the quickmask mode will take care of whatever your extraction needs may be.

another great way to remove objects from(some) backgrounds quickly is though " select /color range"-This works best when the object is against a solid background- (and is mostly a different color than the background itself)-the selection can be refined by switching back and forth from the quick mask mode- it seems like that plugin is a refined version of this function

I have a question...I always hear that the pen tool is the best way to cut out, but why is it better than the lasso? I don't think I've ever even used the pen...I start with the magnetic lasso, then use the regular lasso to fix what the magnetic one didn't get. What are the benefits of the pen tool over the lasso?

No, I haven't tried it yet. I thought it looked easier to use than other plugins I'd seen and thought it might be useful to someone.

PEN TOOL ROOLZ!

It is not the easiest way, but it is the most "pro" way to do it. There are a couple tuts on it if you go to the tutorials link above at the top of this page.

Look for a two-legged dog or a toaster Smile

(Also, the tut MASKS has some good pointers - by Ledirlo)

Shortly I started learning my way around with the pen-tool. Now that I got the hang of it, I can say that it is a fantastic tool. Just take your time to practice with it and follow some tuts.

when taking classes at school.. no matter what progarm we were learing Photoshop Illustrator or Freehand.. the teachers made sure we knew that pen tool. Took me two weeks to get the hang of the thing
