I made this one in about 20 minutes using Fireworks MX 2004, one filter, one background external, two vector shapes, and various adjustments for color/background.

Several ways of making shadows... here are a few tutorials on shadows

http://www.good-tutorials.com/search/query/shadow

Also, for the circle, a couple of quick ways to do it in PS:
Circular Marquee tool- Shift-drag a circle on a blank canvas, go to edit-stroke-then set your stroke to whatever thickness and color you want and it will fill it.

Another way, create a circle in Illustrator and bring it into PS.

For other shapes, use the pen tool and create a path. Then choose a brush and click "stoke" on the path pallet.

There's a couple of quick ways to make a circle.

what tools are you using? Dew gave good directions for PS/Illustrator but they don't do me much good in Fireworks. If you're using the GIMP then dew's instructions would be good.

Also the question about shadows is a bit vague. Personally I suck at shadows still but there are lots of good tut's (tutorials) out there (like the one dew referenced).

Are you trying to create shadows for a specific object or trying to correct an existing shadow? Or do you just want to do a "drop shadow" for your sig graphic?

thats the easy way to do it, there are many ways to do shadows, sometimes I do them by hand, sometimes I use the origin as a guide duplicate and work on the shadows from that, the pointers Dew gives are great, and of course another way is what Chaos said above
