make a new layer--
put it just below the layer you want rasterized-
now take that layer and "merge down" to the blank layer--
VOILA!!!

That's silly stuff man
Simple answer?
copy the selection on a new layer to keep it safe-- desatuate the selection-
:IMAGE:ADJUSMENTS:Deasaturate OR if you just want to color an area use the "Sponge tool"
Then in a new empty layer above that--set the new layer mode to COLOR--pik a color and paint over it=fiddle around with it's opacity and even other layer modes.
