Open Letter to the PSC Community
on Dec 16, 2009 @ 1:30 pm, TutorMe wrote: - from MODERATORS and OWNER Recently, there have been some issues regarding using outside sources in chops (creations) here at PSC. The reality is, almost everyone here has at one time "borrowed" images from the internet. In fact, in recent years, many members have made it a habit to list EXTERNAL sources on their images. This, in a small way, acknowledges our usage of other people's work in the creation of our own images. Some members do not bother giving these details, and there will probably always be an ongoing discussion if this is right or wrong. The reality is: if you don't have written permission from the other artist/photographer/graphic designer/techDweeb/etc. then you SHOULDN'T be using it. And, if we adhere to that reality, this website could quickly grind to a halt. So here are some GUIDELINES that we hope you will all seriously consider: If you choose to go the "disclose source material" route, be IMPECCABLE with it. This is important from a "copyright" point as well as a moral artistic point. Don't pretend you've done something cool that SOMEONE ELSE has put their own creativity into. GIVE THEM CREDIT, or at least don't put that credit upon yourself. PRETENDING THAT YOU'VE CREATED SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVEN'T WILL GET YOU BANNED ON THIS SITE. Please note: we are serious about this. If you are in doubt about what you are using, spend some time going through your own files of personal and family photos and find something you can use. Or do like many of us do here, grab a camera and go shoot what you need. Thanks for your consideration and we trust that you'll all get the spirit behind this message! Your PSC MODs **PLEASE NOTE: You're free to post comments here, but for discussion and/or questions please refer to the thread here.** |

I'm not sure why you're taking the offensive here, Carl. The main point being made here is if you choose to list your external sources, don't leave any out. It doesn't look good for you. If you don't want to list externals, don't.

One thing people should do is ONLY grab images from Public Domain sites. I listed a few:
http://www.pdimages.com/
http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/
http://www.bing.com (type in PUBLIC DOMAIN IMAGES)
Remember to verify the site first before

Actually, you could make it mandatory to use only public domain, and royalty-free images. Just have people use public domain sites to grab images if they don't have them. There are a lot out there.

Hi: I was wondering about the free image sites. I've gotten a few pics from public domain sites. Otherwise all the rest is my own material. Should I mention the public domain site if I use one of their images?

As a newbie, sometimes I get images from the net. Should I give credit to the name of the site where the image came from?

I have also learned that what you sometimes shoot also could fall under copy rights like Zoo's, Amusement Parks, Some building, etc. and even people.

HAH CarlC...as an old timer, we prided ourselves in finding the best externals, never quoted them and the words "all source" didn't exist. Times have changed as users have changed I guess. And the site...with advantage.

We need to show comments on Anon contests; therefore to list externals~

I would agree with all of what you said, but keep in mind that works based on another work are what is called a derivative work for purposes of copyright law.
